Counsellors

Evolve offers a counselling service for young people, providing up to 6 free sessions.  Our 2 counsellors, Keri and Sharon, work at Evolve part time and each brings their own unique expertise and approach.
To get a referral to counselling you will need to see a nurse at Evolve, who will help you to choose the right counsellor for your needs.

*Please be aware that there may be a long waiting time before you can see a counsellor at Evolve, as we have long waiting lists.  We will do our best to help you find the best option for you within a reasonable time frame and may offer to refer you to another service if we are unable to help.

Sharon Fisher

I am nearly fifty but I haven't forgotten what it's like to be young and struggling with challenges.  I have been involved with youth while coaching highschool netball teams, spending time with my daughter's friends, and counselling youth.
My interests are food and movies, and I visit Kenya most years to spend time with two 5 year old orphan girls that I set up a trust for to keep them in boarding school instead of the terrible orphanage they would otherwise be in.
Working with families and youth, and alcohol and drug counselling, I have developed a range of skills and expertise to help you to:

  • understand your relationships and challenges
  • develop emotional skills to understand and deal with them better
  • reduce self-consciousness, while increasing self-awareness
  • develop relational skills to perceive your own and others' needs and emotions accurately, and strategies to manage conflicting needs
  • reduce pain and increase wellbeing

Some specific issues I can help you with are: anxiety, depression, PTSD, emotional and relational problems, over-eating, adjusting to head injury, grief and loss, addiction and substance abuse, self harm, pain management.

(Sharon currently works at Evolve on Tuesdays)

Keri Onyewu

I am from the UK and have been in New Zealand since 1999. I originally trained as a Psychiatric Nurse before retraining as a Counsellor. I’ve worked in a number of specialty areas and gained skill and knowledge in helping people with anxiety and stress, lack of confidence, eating problems, low mood, disturbing ideas and upsetting experiences.

My approach to counselling may best described as ‘person-centred, solution focused and resiliency based’.

(Keri currently works at Evolve every Thursday)
